Why several Vastu rules make climatic sense
Many core Vastu principles developed as practical responses to the Indian climate, and they still hold up when read that way.
- Kitchen in the south-east. Morning sun reaches it early and the prevailing breeze carries cooking heat away from living areas.
- Main entrance facing north or east. Softer morning light, less harsh afternoon heat load on the entry.
- Heavier structures to the south and west. Thicker mass on the hot faces buffers afternoon heat.
- Open space to the north and east. Maximises gentle daylight without the harsh western gain.
Followed for those reasons, these choices make a house more comfortable and cheaper to cool regardless of whether you read them spiritually.
The principles worth prioritising
If you want a Vastu-compliant plan but your plot or approved layout will not allow everything, these are the ones our clients most often care about and which are most straightforward to accommodate:
- Main door orientation — north or east where the plot permits.
- Kitchen placement — south-east corner, cooking facing east.
- Master bedroom — south-west, considered the most grounded position.
- Puja room — north-east, the direction associated with the early morning sun.
- Toilets — kept out of the north-east corner.
Where Vastu and practicality collide
Plot orientation is fixed, and municipal setbacks are fixed. On a west-facing plot with a fixed access road, a north-facing main door may simply be impossible without an unusable circulation layout.
When that happens, we say so plainly and offer the trade-off rather than pretending the plan satisfies everything. In our experience most families would rather understand the compromise than be told what they want to hear and discover it later.
How we handle it
If Vastu matters to you, tell us at the first site visit — not after the drawings are done. Orientation decisions cascade through the entire plan, and accommodating them early usually costs nothing. Retrofitting them into a finalised layout is where it becomes expensive and compromised.
